Weather Alerts!

Safety and wellbeing is our number one priority when it comes to our children and staff.  Unexpected weather may cause a delay in the start of school and quiet possibly a school closure.  The most common question asked, is how do we become aware?  It is important to listen to a local radio station when at all possible as they inform of us bright and early of school closures/delays.  When school is delayed or closed unexpectedly, we as a school have no way to communicate in large to our families. We anticipate calmer days ahead of us weather-wise, however when in doubt, listen to your local radio.

The Wenatchee Windstorm

So very hard the wind blew,

The trees and branches flew!

From the wind I did hide,

Then I moved aside and cried.

Fences, garbage, everywhere,

It almost hit my hair!

The cold, old, tree

Fell right over ME!

IÕm still here with my family

Thank You!

Mrs. YoungÕs class of twenty-nine students read 100 books together so Scholastic Books will donate 100 books to children in need! Way to go kindergartners!

Target has generously donated $25 to Mrs. Thompson-CockleÕs classroom for supplies and materials. Make Your Day

What is it?  Make Your Day is a self-discipline and citizenship program that allows teachers to teach and allows students to learn.

Philosophy:

Your child is very familiar with the following two quotes:

ÒNo one has the right to interfere with the learning or safety of othersÓ and ÒDo what is expected and do it the best you canÓ.

Make Your Day is based on the premise that every person within the school environment has the right to learn and be safe without interference from others.  In order to evaluate if a student is Òdoing what is expected and doing it the best he/she canÓ, students are provided with the opportunity to be involved in a self-peer-teacher evaluation of their efforts/behaviors on a frequent basis by the earning of ÒPointsÓ.

Advantages:

  1. All students can choose to succeed each day.
  2. Make Your Day teaches students that they are responsible for their learning and behavior from the time they leave for school until they return home.
  3. Make Your Day is [positively motivated.  It reinforces appropriate behaviors and offers alternative choices for success.
  4. Make Your Day constantly points out to students that being responsible for his/her learning is the key to school and lifelong success.

When and where steps are used:

Step One:

Step Two:

Step Three:

Step Four:

Step Five:

A student chooses to advance to Step Five when he/she exhibits behavior that is inappropriate for school.

WAMU School Savings

It's fun, it's free, and it's just for kids!

Have you opened a savings account for your child yet?  If not, now is the time to open a WAMU School Savings account.  Every Wednesday, any child that has a WAMU account can bring money to deposit.  Deposits can be $0.25 - $1.00 - $10.00 - $100.00, in other words is can be as big or as small as youÕd like.  Children are dismissed to go to the Computer Lab to make a deposit into their account. Parent volunteers, Kim Amarok and Karen Sheppard count each childÕs money, write it in their bank book, and post it to the official Washington Mutual bank account.  When banking is over, the money is brought into the bank, along with a printout of the deposits that were made.  The bank then, credits your childÕs bank account.  In order to withdraw money, your child must be present.  Just stop by Washington Mutual Bank in East Wenatchee and make a withdrawal.  This is a great way to teach your child about banking.  One child thanked his mom for letting him bank.  He said Òbanking helps me learn what saving money is all about.Ó  Your child earns a prize for every two deposits that are made!

If you havenÕt signed yet, have your child go to the Computer lab next Monday to pick up a registration form.  Kim and Karen will give them a packet.  Please noteÉthe Social Security number needs to be your childÕs application AND your child has to sign the bottom of the form.  Physical street addresses are also required.  Send the completed form back with your child the following Wednesday.  Once the forms are received, it takes a week to get the account open.

Since 1923, Washington Mutual has been helping students learn the importance of saving. Our School Savings¨ program is serious fun!

RememberÉ It's fun, it's free, and it's just for kids!

Safety Issue

It is important not only Lincoln students use the cross walk, itÕs a good rule of thumb if parents use them as well.  Our children learn best to what adultÕs model.  We have wonderful fifth grade Ôsafety patrolÕ students who take much care and concern in crossing both students and adults safely toward their destination.  Please be a good sport and use the help of our students and crosswalks.

2007 Nominees
Young Reader's Choice & Sasquatch
Fourth and Fifth grade students have the opportunity to read the 2007 Young Reader's Choice and Sasquatch nominees.  There are twenty books to choose from.  They have to read or have someone read to them at least two of the twenty books in order to vote in April for their favorite book.  As each student reads one of the nominee books, they can fill out a form with the Title, Author and a short summary of what they read.  The forms are in the library.
After they fill out the summary form, I will be doing a drawing each month from all the turned in forms at our,  ÒStar student AwardÓ assemblies.  There will be a prize for the student name I draw.
4th and 5th grade students know which books they can read since we have had books talks on all the nominees.  There is a list of all twenty books for students to take home to help them decide which book they will read next.
This is a great opportunity to get involved with your children and enjoy a good book together.  Parents are allowed to check out a book with their child after school.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Anderson
Teacher/Librarian

Passport Club

We are excited to begin a new Geography program for all of our 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students!  This new Passport Club allows students to focus on learning five (5) to twenty-five (25) world locations each month.  Your child (with parent and teacher support) will choose how many locations they want to learn each month, gets a practice map, and the learning begins.

On an assigned ÒCheck-dateÓ (once a month) your child will be asked to simply point out with his or her finger each geographical location they have been learning.  The students will not only benefit from the learning involved, but will also earn color copies of stamps as a reward for learning the locations.  Each student will receive an official Passport Club book to store their stamps in for the year.  The more locations accurately learned each month, the more stamps earned.

A few Passport Club hints for students and families:

LincolnÕs Passport Club is funded and supported by WenatcheeÕs Sunrise Rotary and staffed by school and community volunteers. THANK YOU SUNRISE ROTARY!

We are always looking to recruit and welcome enthusiastic people for the group.  The commitment is only 2 hours per Check-date (once a month).  If you are interested in being a part of the Passport Club team, please contact Brad Schock at 888-0824.

We AskedÉ

How Do you

Get to KNOW

Your ChildrenÕs

Teachers?

A class get-together

ÒEvery September, we have a class party. The teacher, the kids in the class, and their families are all invited to come. You can talk to the teacher outside of the school setting and get to know them better. ItÕs a great way to start off the school year.Ó

-Paige Begley: children ages 6, 8, and 10: Co-vice president of membership, Helm Elementary PTA, Williamsville NY

Building Bridges

ÒI write a note to each of my daughtersÕ teachers the first Friday after school has started, I mention something my daughter liked about the past week or something about the classroom that she shared wit me. I continue these notes throughout the years. Positive feedback helps build bridges.Ó

-Kelly Green: children ages 6 and 10

Vice president, Wilson Elementary PTA: Newark DE

Teacher questionnaires

ÒAt the beginning of each year, I ask my childrenÕs teacher to fill out a questionnaire with getting to know you questions about their hobbies, favorite restaurant, favorite candy, ECT. This comes in handy at the holidays or if handy at the holidays or if I want to do a little something nice for the teachers.Ó

Kelle Sawyer: children ages 6 and 8: Chair for staff birthday recognition:  Crestwood Intermediate PTA

BM. Williams Primary PTA: Chesapeake, VA

PTA connections

ÒFor many years, the best way I have built relationships with my childrenÕs teachers is simply through my work with the PTA. When teachers see that you are coming in to help the school in whatever way you can, they are more open, friendly, and accessible I get a lot of information about my children and extra opportunities at the school from passing conversations when I am at the school to volunteerÓ

-Kathie Green: children ages 10, 16, 18, and 19:  Co-president, Northrop High School PTSA: Fort Wayne, IN

Reaching out

ÒIf we all just took a moment every so often to stop and ask our childÕs teacher, ÒHow Are you doing?Ó and Òcan I do anything for you today?Ó we would all have great relationships. Taking an interest in teachers personally makes communication much easier when a problem does arise, the lines of communication have been established and we are able to speak more openlyÓ

-Tara Wright: children ages 1, 4 and 6: President, Thompson Elementary PTA Vero Beach, FL

Lunchtime chats

ÒSometimes it is hard to find the time to chat with teachers, so I like to offer to bring lunch to our kidsÕ teachers from time to time. ItÕs a great opportunity to talk to them as a person, not as: the teacher. I get to learn about their family why they went into teaching, etc.Ó

-Sarah Lee Vinton: children ages 6 and 10

Brauchie Elementary PTA: San Antonio, TX

Involvement in the school community

ÒAt meet the teacher night, I introduce myself and spend a few minutes talking with the teacher, I try to attend every school activity that I can, whether it be PTA meeting, curriculum night, or even walking in the townÕs parade with the school! These activities just give me one more opportunity to speak with the teachers and get to know them betterÓ.                                                        -Ginn Evans: childÕs age 6: Westridge Elementary PTA: Kansas City, MD
